You're half right. Sanitation played a major role. The other big player was nutrition.

Vaccination and modern medicine (very surprising to me!) did not play big roles. Sanitation in hospitals of course reduced deaths by infection in hospitals, but that made a low single digit reduction in mortality overall.

I'm fully vaccinated and have multiple doctors in my family and friends, so this really triggered some cognitive dissonance in me.
