Your second paragraph is skewed towards the current, affluent EV driver, not the average US driver.
EVs won't go mainstream until there are affordable used EVs.
The average car in the US is 12 years old, with 144,000 miles. Buying a 12 year old Tesla and driving 15k miles means in four years the battery is gone, and it will cost more to replace the battery than the car is worth. That is a non-sustainable EV future.
