You make a lot of valid points about the variablilty of renewables (I work in energy for 30 years). What you forget is: if we don't get off fossil fuels in the next couple of decades we will die as a species. The younger generations understand this.
A brownout due to insufficient battery storage doesn't compare to choking on soot from unchecked wildfires until the fourhth level 5 hurricane this year arrives while at the same time your drinking water is salinated because the sea level has risen a foot and the sea yields have dropped due to higher ambient sea temperatures, etc., etc.
