You are conflating blockchain technology with cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrencies use blockchains as their ledger. Blockchains do not require cryptocurrencies to function.

I think a more valid critique is if blockchain technology can scale and be fast enough for Web services. I've read multiple places that limitation is why (for example) Bitcoin won't replace MasterCard anytime soon, because Bitcoin transactions are too slow.
