Yes, this is definitely true and I'm watching this happen from central Europe for 30 years now (about half my life).

However - and following your analogy - this is just the current role that Europe is playing. For the last 75 years Europe has played Ron Weasley to America's Harry Potter. The previous 500+ years had Europe as James T. Kirk, galavanting around the globe and sleeping with every green-skinned hottie who crossed his path.

I've no illusions that the end of Europe's current role is guaranteed to be painless. More likely it will be like "Guy" from "Galaxy Quest." The point is, we don't yet know what Europe's next role will be. If the US doesn't burn the fucking theater to the ground at the end of their run (a pretty big "if") it is wrong to assume that Europe's current role is the role it will play forever.

My hope is that when the US empire collapses then Europe and Asia (maybe one continent, maybe two, who the fuck cares?) can work together without my countrymen from accross the Atlantic constantly fucking things up. Hope springs eternal.
