Yes, early on. Then in 1948 not the British, but the brand new Israelis with the backing of the UN. This was the "Nakba."

What we're seeing now with Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza is a second Nakba at best (if the Gaza residents can get out), while currently it is straight up genocide of the Gaza residents.
