Years ago I saw a report with video about how elephants in the wild will not allow their calves to drink when they know a drought is too dire. The elephants know that the herd must drink and then cross a huge distance to the next water, but that the calves won't survive the journey, so they starve them, knowing the adults will survive to make new babies. It is horrific, no matter the species.
