I guaran-fucking-tee you that if companies offered higher pay, they'd get more people to apply. This last year saw the US working class thrown to the wolves, while those at the top made literally trillions of dollars. Working people saw that the government can spend trillions to save them, but the corrupt congress just won't. They are called "essential" except when it comes to being paid. At some point - which it looks like we're at - working people just say "Fuck it. I will not work for a starvation wage on the front lines of a pandemic - this one or the next."
