We're not "protecting" the EU. We're occupying the EU. NATO exists to counter threats that arise due to NATO existing.

What NATO membership requires is standardization on NATO weapons, all of which are dominated by US-based MIC firms. Lots of EU weapons are produced locally, but a huge number are sourced and/or specced from US firms.

NATO expansion is just a way for the US-based MIC to expand its business.
