We're about the same age so bass-o-matic brings a smile to my face. Also, "It's a dessert topping and a floor wax." I haven't lived in the US in decades so I haven't watched SNL except on youtube in decades.
IMHO Norm MacDonald was the funniest and best Weekend Update anchor. Norm being fired for refusing to back off jokes about OJ "I murdered my ex-wife and her boyfriend" Simpson kind of proves the entire point of your post.
I get a kick out of watching old Weekend Update clips where Norm went after Hillary Clinton. I think my favorite is "Operation Frayed Wire."
