Urine stench is a sign of a lot of people with little time. If you smelled urine all the time it is because you never left the mass-tourist path in any of the places you visited.

I've been to Italy dozens of times. The last time in September for 5 days. My goal for the five days was to soak up the atmosphere of the little town I was in, the slightly larger town on the lake we biked to, and enjoy the company of my travel partner. Not quite true. I did want to hike up to the local castle. Done.

The trip was a wonderful. I hadn't been to that town in over 20 years, and the last time was at the bad end of a bad relationship. This trip painted over that. I can't wait to go back. No urine stench the entire trip.

With the internet you can certainly get better pictures of all those landmarks than if you're standing there. If you want the experience, then you need time.

If I told you I was coming to the Netherlands and I wanted to see Amsterdam, Zandvoort, Den Hague, Delft, and Rotterdam in two days, do you think I'd have a good time? Italy is much larger and much older. You could spend two days just walking the streets of Rome and only see a fraction of what is in the city.
