Those were the two things I came here to comment on. I lived in the north and the south in the US for many years. Visited friends and have relatives in the Carolinas. Racism is endemic.

Yes, you can get out and play sand volleyball in March, late February some years. But you'll have to hose the sand down from June until September or you'll burn your feet.
