This rule is something I learned in engineering school that helps me to this day decades later. The rule applies to everything from cleaning your room to pulling a stump to replacing an online integrated optimization system in a running plant.

The exception to this rule is relationships with women. Relationships with women are simply black magic. Do not try to separate the parts out or you'll find yourself summoning a demon rather than going to dinner.
