This is unfortunately what happens to most people who go from having no money (let alone fame) to lots of money. They don't know how to manage their money and get scammed. Sometimes they are lucky and the scam is small and they learn from it. Sometimes it is big, or a lot of scammers at once and they end up going bankrupt (e.g. Mike Tyson - at least partly).

I haven't followed Ms. Welch's story. I hope she gets out in one piece.
