This is quite common in Europe.

Depending on age and multiple other factors (e.g. if someone is dying of cancer at age 40 and has an unmarried live-in partner for the last 15 years who has their own income) you can also put in the will that the live-in partner may stay for a number of years so they have time to mourn and move on with their life before having to find a new place to live.
