This is my life in Europe for several decades. I live in Vienna, walk to my office and take my bike to my gym. I could also easily walk to a gym, but my gym is one of the best gyms in the world and 1/2 my bike ride is through a park about the size of central park, making it a joy.

I have everything I need for daily life within about 500 meters. I know the local vendors on my "commute" of 450 steps from my flat to my office. We greet each other and chat when we have time.

Before I moved to Vienna I lived in Houston. Where I lived has a walkability score in the low 20s, bordering on "gray" (I guess too low to score!). Being a teenager in Houston without a car is horrible, as Houston has horrible public transport as well.

I don't know if I'll ever go back to the US, but if I do it would have to be to a walkable city.
