They invaded Ukraine for multiple reasons, the main ones being to NOT have US missiles in Kharkov only a few flight minutes from Moscow and NATO troops on the least defensible border into Russia.

Ukraine is from where the Nazis invaded and destroyed huge portions of Russia (an area equivalent to the area from the the East coast of the US to the Mississippi).
