“There’s a terrible danger in voting for the lesser of two evils because the parties can set it up that way.”
— Hunter S. Thompson
Nearly 50 years ago Hunter S. Thompson warned against voting for the lesser of two evils. Something Thompson noted had gone on since at least 1960.
For the average American, things have gotten worse since Thompson was reporting on Democrats pleading with voters to get Nixon out before he got another four years.
Voting for someone is all you can do. Picking the candidate with the policies closest to what you want for the country is always correct. Voting “blue no matter who” and then saying, “We’ll hold his/her feet to the fire” has worked as well as Charlie Brown believing Lucy will not pull the football away this time.
Lucy always pulls the football away. The Democratic establishment always gives up fighting for what their base wants. The result is that when Dems are in power, the best the average voter gets is an incremental change. Usually it is a slower decay of rights, privileges and financial progress until the Republicans take over. See Joe Biden’s many, many attempts to cut Social Security with Republicans and call it “reforms” and “saving the system” as just one example.
The exception are social rights. But the right for LGBTQ people to buy a wedding cake doesn’t mean much if they can’t afford a cake, let alone a wedding or rent or health care or college or trade school or a vacation or a home or a retirement or a… “hey you know the thing.”
Don’t let people voter shame you. If Joe Biden wants your vote he needs to fucking earn it. So far he can’t remember what day people vote on and lies constantly about his record. So unless Biden makes some really ironclad contracts to voters, his word is about as good as Trump’s — good for nothing.
