There is one new point - new for me - in this horrible slaughter that I hadn't thought of before. The Jews were given a homeland because the Nazis killed so many of them. Why were they not given part of Germany?
Why take land away from groups living in Palestine who had nothing to do with the Nazis? It seems rather anti-Semitic to me that Europe said - in essence, "Let's ship the Jews off to the Middle East so we don't have them here."
It is not like Germany in 1945-48 was in a position to refuse a Jewish state on their territory. Maybe they even could have had an East and West Israel during the cold war, that got reunited with the rest of Germany in the 90s.
