The US invaded Russia to try to overthrow the fledgling USSR in 1917 (IIRC). I think if Hitler had been a better strategist he could have gotten (not so) secret support from the US to overthrow Russia. The Nazis would agree to "go easy" on the British Isles in exchange for taking out the USSR. We'll never know, but I think that is a viable theory.
