The US drug problem from south of the US border has been going on at the current level for at least 40 years. The hiring of illegal immigrants has been going going on for much longer.

It is such a weird coincidence that Mexico has a new leader who leans left and does not toe the US line, and now, after all these decades, we've decided somehow it is legal for the US to invade Mexico to solve our demand for drugs and illegal immigrants.

Of course invading Mexico won't lower US demand for drugs and illegal immigrants. It will just disrupt supply temporarily. Prices will go up while suppliers find different routes to bring their goods to market.

The issue of solving the root cause of illegal drug demand, and illegal immigrant worker demand would not involve an illegal invasion of a sovereign country.

As horrible as this whole situation is, my brain can't help think it will be interesting to see the US try to spin how the Russian invasion of their next door neighbor is bad, but the US doing it is good.

In my teens and early 20s I spent more than a few weeks down on South Padre Island and going over the border to Matamoros to drink cheap tequila and party. It seems like a different lifetime. Those days are gone now.
