The top highlight on this essay is that people “choose” the prison cell. But what I’ve highlighted is what Caity clearly identifies as the real problem. A vast majority of people in the US don’t even recognize they are in a prison cell.

I emigrated from the US in the early 90s. The Matrix came out in 1999 after I’d already been at least partially unplugged. I personally think The Matrix was so popular in the US because so many of my countrymen and women identify with the concept of the “matrix,” without realizing they’re in it. Our oligarch masters don’t have to grow you in a pod and feed you with virtual reality to create “a prison for your mind.”

Those of us outside the “The Matrix” see it for what it is. Getting people to unplug is not so simple. First they have to be convinced to take the red pill.
