The "function of the markets" ceased to be valuing companies at least 2 decades ago with the dotcom bubble. WSB was just doing EXACTLY what the all the big Wall Street firms do, just more ethically. WSB saw an opportunity - overleveraging on GME and used it. The difference is that WSB did NOT use insider information, just democratic market analysis.
