That is exactly what calling "whataboutism" is. Saying the US is doing the wrong thing but with the right intention, so the US gets a pass.

I'm against war. But since the west has NOT spent the last 20 years condemning Clinton for bombing Serbia, Bush/Cheney/Blaire for Iraq, France/UK/US for Libya, US for illegal bombing of Syria, US for illegal occupation of Syria, US for assassination of Soleimani, etc., and delivering those leaders to the Hague for war crimes, then it is MASSIVELY hypocritcal to condem Russia/Putin for doing EXACTLY what we have been doing.

Either Clinton, Bush, Cheney, Blaire, Obama, and Trump are war ciminals AND Putin is a war criminal, or none of them are. Two sets of international law means no international law.
