We are discussing with our next door neighbors if they are cool with us planting an apple tree, as it will probably shade part of their lawn depending on where we plant. We already have a few planters of vegetables, herbs and strawberries. Planning on adding tomatoes this year.
On the back lot of our yard that we maintain (but don’t own) we’ve done what you’re talking about. We planted vines on a long expanse of wall (the back of a row of garages) and experimented with different low plants that don’t need much light, but hold moisture. That brought bugs, which in turn brought field mice, birds and twice a hedge hog (sadly our previous dog chased them away). After nearly 10 years of that it is self sustaining green oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle — very lush in summer.
The best thing is we put climbing plants all over the walls surrounding the trash bins. The first couple of years here it stunk so badly in the summer. Now not only does it not smell, but the plants absorb a lot of the sound. And it looks great. Win-win-win!
