Colonialism, regardless under what flag was already no longer accepted as legitimate at the time Britain "gave" the land to create Israel.

That is the basic problem for Israel. If this had all happened 100 years earlier, the Palestinians probably would share the fate of indigenous Americans. Maybe not, but probably.

"Unfortunately" for Israel, world opinion turned against colonialism by the mid-20th century. By the beginning of this century, technology allowed the world to see the day-to-day horrors of apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and genocide being perpetrated on the Palestinians by the colonial power of Israel.

Maybe the Israelis will succeed. Right now it looks like they are headed for the fate of post-WWII Germany.
