Start with just being honest about your situation and other people's, in person and on-line. For just one example: It makes a world of difference in what can be achived politically if people struggling are seen as victims of an unfair system or moochers. In the US since Reagan, the poor have been caste (pun intended) as the latter, and policy has followed.
