Stalin was a brutal dictator, no doubt. In comparison to the Nazis, who were lead by a brutal dictator who also wanted to take over Europe and also kill all the Jews and also enslave all those who he didn't see as racially pure there is no comparison.
My family here in Europe lived under both regimes. For the average person the Soviet regime was less bad.
Patton wanting to side with the Nazis to fight the Soviets was really delusional, or maybe just fitting with US policy since the Russian revolution.
The US was on the side of Nazis, or at least not against them, basically until the Nazis declared war on us and we had no choice but to fight. Major US firms, most notably Ford and GM, had major ties with the Nazi government throughout the war (not just before).
Finally, I think anyone who would feel their life has no purpose without being in a war is pyschologically damaged. Apparently Patton had a lust for battle from an early age. I have no expertise in psychology, so I will refrain from positing a theory as to why anyone would develop this attitude towards life.
