Since you included TV series... how do "The Monkees" fit in to this story?

The Monkees were cast in California to be a fake TV band on a show about a band. The Monkees got so famous as a real band that a certain up and coming singer had to change his name from "David Jones" to "David Bowie" to avoid being confused with Davey Jones of the Monkees.
