Parallels between 1930s Germany and 2010s US are many and growing. I've written about this numerous times. Of course there are differences, but desperate people do desperate things.

25-30% of every western country I've known (quite a few) will support authoritarians. In the US, 80-85% of the country is financially desperate. Combined with 25-30% who willfully support authoritarians, you get what we see today in the US: Semi-permanent (maybe permanent) troops in DC, ever increasing censorship, ever harsher rhetoric, ever harsher crackdowns on "dissidents," ever more militarized police. Etc., etc. Just like 1930s Germany.
