Of course I can't see into the heads of other people. I also believe that about 30% of any population are authoritarians. Those people in SF might be of that ilk and want to erase their political enemies from history.
Taking down a statue is something different. I won't edit my comment from yesterday, but I would reword it. I don't think it is "an order of magnitude" different. I think it is a different tactic, the exact same tactic (not just by the way) that is used in Germany and here in Austria regarding Nazis.
Everyone kid in school here learns about the Nazis. Aside: It was very interesting see what my son was taught here in Vienna compared to what I learned in Minneapolis and Houston. But nowhere in Germany or Austria will you find a "Joseph Goebbels Park," a "Hitler Avenue" or "Hermann Goering Elementary School." Those guys were part of the history here, but they are not celebrated now. That is the difference.
