Not just "not really." Not at all. Ukraine has been in a civil war from 2014 until now. Russia entered the civl war on the side of the separatists in 2022. Just as Ambassador Burns in 2008 stated might happen if the US pushed for Ukraine to join NATO.

The situation in Ukraine is not so dissimilar to the situation in Syria, with two big differences. In 2011 the US helped turn street protests into a civil war. In 2015 Syria asked their long-time ally Russia for help. Russia entered the civil war on the side of the state (first big difference). There was a grinding war of attrition until Russia helped Syria take back all their land...except the land where the US illegally invaded Syria and (to this day) illegally occupies 1/3 of Syria. Russia does not want to risk WWIII, so they have not (yet) attacked US forces illegally occupying Syria.
