North Korea is not the USSR. It is like saying, "Go live in Somalia and tell me how much you like the free market." No social structures like police and courts. Just a completely "free market."
My wife's entire family live in Czechia. Her parents were kids during WWII. Life in the Soviet Union had bad things and good, just like we in the west have.
What I've found after decades together with my wife (born in Czechoslovakia and moved abroad just after the USSR broke up) is that the USSR and US were VERY similar. Just mirror images of each other.
I could list dozens of examples, but that is too big of a subject for a sub-comment.
Suffice it to say I think your comparison is flawed.
