Asaad is a dictator, but a secular one. Prior to the 10-year US dirty war to try to overthrow him, Syria had a very good mix of religions living in relative peace and security.

Syria still does have a relatively peaceful mix of religions, but since the US is illegally occupying 1/3 of the country, there is a lot of economic suffering that strains everything in the country.
