No Awards for “Not an Asshole”

I hope this attitude is a generational thing that will get better with time. My sister and brother in law had a VERY disabled child and have two other non-disabled children. My mom would always praise my brother-in-law for NOT leaving my sister. “So many other men would have!” and I would always say, “Mom, you don’t get an award for not being an asshole.”

My sister and brother-in-law are great parents. I say that even though I disagree with them a lot politically and religiously to name a couple of teeny tiny subjects. Their two other kids have grown into wonderful young adults. They gave their disabled child the best life possible in his too short — but much longer than expected — life. I believe he lived so long precisely because they both are such great, loving and caring parents, and share responsibilities for all their kids.
