My brother-in-law worked in the Texas prison system for nearly 30 years. He was a warden for a majority (IIRC) of those years. So I've heard and seen (two visits) prison life, albeit thankfully vicariously, from the point of view of those at the top of the inside the prison food chain. Sadly none of this is news or surprises me.
Prisons in the US have been a growing "industry" for decades. We think we're so much better than China with its suicide nets around their Apple factories. We have our own legal slaves in prison. As late-stage capitalism continues in the US, I expect more and more people farther up your "shitty technology adoption curve" to find themselves behind bars, feeding that growing "industry."
