The government isn't wasteful because it is big. FFS we are 330,000,000 people. Organizing anything for that many people takes a lot of people. The US government is wasteful because it is corrupt - and the worst way it is corrupt is because we outsource huge amounts of important work to contractors who have their private company's interests ahead of our interests (i.e. the US government). Like - for example - Elon Musk.
