Just like Germany did for years with Nord Stream I. This was reported in the western press prior to the invasion, but since then has been "memory holed" because it doesn't fit the narrative.

The reality in Europe is that we had peace with Russia because we were business partners. Ironically, this was how the groups that became the EU started. Get countries that had warred for centuries in Europe to be business partners, and we'll stop fighting on battlefields and do it in boardrooms instead.

This was working great, but the US wasn't getting a cut. That is why the US had been talking about the "problem" of Nord Stream for at least a decade before we blew it up.
