I've lived in Vienna for going on 30 years, 15 now in a working class district that is slowly gentrifying.
That is "great" because my properties here have doubled in price. It also sucks because as every old 2 story building of old flats is replaced by a 4-5 story building of condos, the number of people who can afford to live here drops massively.
I used to live in downtown Vienna. It was great for drinking and going out to eat fancy, but there was almost no infrastructure. Almost no one lives there anymore. Nearly all the "daily need" stores are now selling tourist nick-nacks.
In my working class district, there are about 12 small/medium-sized grocery stores with fresh fruit and vegetables. I wave/chat with the owners who I know by name.
I think in 30 more years I'll be the old guy complaining that there is nothing left of the neighborhood, just chain stores.
Not exactly what I'd call progress.
