I've lived abroad (mostly in Austria) a long time. Something you wrote in point #1 reminded me of something most Americans who visit Austria are completely clueless about: Tourist areas do not represent the entire country. It'd be like a girl from Vienna visiting Orlando and thinking that is how all of Florida is, let alone the whole US.
