It is very common for people who had little money (most Americans) who then start making big money, to do this to show, "they've made it." Tons of celebrities do it.

Since the US has a lot of "celebrity worship" regular people then emulate this behavior, even when they really can't afford it.

TL;DR: It is a variation of "Fake it till you make it."
