It definitely was a mistake. Germany's attack failed mostly because of lack of supplies, particularly supplies for the Russian winter. They were supposed to attack in warmer weather but the attack was delayed.

The point is that if Germany had spent time fortifying defenses, they would have had a much better chance of repelling a Soviet advance rather than losing due to ever increasing supply chain issues.
