Interesting perspective. I had a friend who worked at Chrysler this whole time. I liked the PT Cruiser, but wasn't willing to pay so much for a little 4 Door Chrysler based on expected build quality.
I'd also say what killed the PT Cruiser is what saved the Mini from a similar fate: New models and styles. I bought a Mini Cooper S in 2006, the last year you could get a supercharger, as I always wanted a car with a blower. It was a blast for the 7 years I had it.
In the intervening years since 2006, BMW (Mini) has introduced about 256 different Mini versions with any number of doors, drives and fuels. That is how you keep interest going. Electric versions are already on the road here in Vienna - although IIRC you can only lease right now.
