In August I'll have had my own company 29 years. No family money or connections. I emigrated alone to another country so I was really on my own.

And yet I still feel privileged. A kid today going to the same state colleges as I did would have come out with a bunch of debt that I didn't have. Would I have risked quitting my job and starting a company in another country if I had $50k in student debt? Probably not, if I'm being honest.

My company is still small (fewer than 20 people) also because I had to build it up very slowly as again, I had no family wealth to backstop me or or connections to provide business.

I learned a LOT of things over the years. One of which is, if the story sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Particularly anyone who is selling you a course/seminar on how to build a hugely successful business while allegedly running a hugely successful business at the same time.

I don't write a book or sell seminars on how to start a business because it is far more lucrative for me to spend my time growing my own business. I write comments about it, but those are asynchronous responses. During peak business seasons, I won't post much of anything for weeks at a time. If I have free time, I spend it with my family, friends and personal activities like sports.
