I'm an electrical engineer and renewable fan, but I also happen to live in reality. I was discussing the copper shortage being a hard stop to renewables with a fellow engineer nearly two years ago already.
So on a macro scale, we're fucked. On an individual scale (where I'm the relatively well off individual) I can install a solar system, a heat pump, and a water pump and I'm relatively energy self-sufficient for 15-25 years. No gas needed.
By that time there will definitely be more other choices (good and bad) to make moving forward, but I'll have avoided a lot of the ups and downs in between.
