I would think that would be expected. I moved to Austria a generation ago and also spent much of the first years immersing myself in local Viennese culture. Ironically enough, I found that Viennese culture is more like my midwestern American childhood than the culture of my teens and early 20s spent in southeast Texas.

I wish you a wonderful time in Paris, no matter if you stay there or not! International travel can open up your mind to a much larger world.

Here I'll throw in some absolutely unasked for advice, and say, "Try to spend much more time with French people than with other US expats." In my (now rather long) time abroad, I've seen many expats, particularly US and Irish expats, who end up in cultural ghettos in Vienna. IMO (and that is of course just my opinion) it is a shame to go abroad and then basically only go to places similar to those in your home country and hang out with people who think just like people from your home country.
