I worked for a while in fast food in high school as well, with similar experiences. However, since that time the companies that repair ice cream machines, particularly at McDonald's, realized they had a very captive customer base. There are currently law suits and congressional discussions regarding "right to repair" that follow from the scam of having an ice cream machine that breaks down constantly and a customer that can only call you for repairs.
