I think the best solution is to just continue on. The more people actually live in bikeable and walkable cities, the harder it will be for people to oppose them.
People (like me) who have a car but love the fact that 95% of the time I don't need it are the best salespeople. I COULD drive. I just don't want to anymore.
To be clear: I grew up as a car guy in the US. Got my first car as soon as I could after turning 16. I really like driving. Since moving to a big city with great infrastructure and public transport, I enjoy not HAVING to drive to get things.
Last year visiting my mom in the states, I installed a new kitchen faucet for her. I hated having to drive, multiple times, to some big box hardware store to get everything I needed. It added probably 90 minutes to what should have been a 90 minute job. After flying 9000 km to visit her, I rather have spent that time talking to her than driving around.
