I think Solo suffered a lot from Star Wars overload. It was very trendy to hate on Star Wars at the time. I liked both Solo and Rogue One, partly for the same reason: Really good stories that stood alone, combined with good acting, good character development (yeah, ok there were a couple of sub-optimals) and good action without it being a CGI-fest.

Rogue One filled a plot hole in a nice way. Solo remained solo (no sequel) and that was also great.

The Last Jedi failed because the character arc of Luke makes no sense. Luke was ready to let his father kill him rather than give up on Anakin's humanity, but he's going to kill the son of his best friend because he thinks he'll go bad? No fucking way.
