I think it depends on which type of abuse and neglect you experienced as a child. US cartoons from the 40s were incredibly violent. US movies VERY often accept bullying between children as normal.

That was the US and family I grew up in, but in cold war Eastern Europe and my wife's family media was very different as were her family dynamics, although both were incredibly similar in other ways.
